Alex’s Homeownership Success: Education & Savings Programs

The dream of owning a home felt out of reach for Alex. As a single mother of four, she faced the uphill battle of staying in a community where rising housing costs made homeownership seem impossible. Despite the challenges, Alex was determined to remain close to her family. That determination led her to NeighborImpact’s HomeSource program.

Alex began her journey by enrolling in NeighborImpact’s HomeBuyer Education workshop, where she learned the essential steps to purchase a home. She also worked closely with a HUD-certified housing counselor, who guided her through the complex and often overwhelming process of becoming a homeowner. While she initially felt uncertain and discouraged, the support and resources she received gave her clarity and confidence. For the first time, Alex felt empowered to pursue her dream.

Through NeighborImpact’s Matched Savings Program, Alex’s efforts gained momentum. For every dollar she saved, the program matched it with five more, accelerating her progress toward a down payment. Staff at NeighborImpact also introduced Alex to First Story, an affordable housing developer. She applied and, to her delight, was accepted to become a homeowner in Sisters, Oregon—just two years after taking her first HomeBuyer Education course.

Today, Alex is a proud homeowner. With NeighborImpact’s help, she proved that even as a single mother facing financial challenges, homeownership is possible.
